چکیده

We develop an individual-level integrated Bayesian model for store shopping trips to capture the relationship between a consumer’s shopping path through the store and her purchasing behavior. Using dynamic latent “attractions” of different zones and product categories in the store as fundamental constructs, our model jointly captures three key aspects of a consumer’s within-store behavior: which zones she visits, how long she stays in each zone, and what purchases, if any, she makes within that zone. We calibrate our model using a novel dataset from the PathTracker system, an electronic shopping cart monitoring system developed by Sorensen Associates. Our study also contributes to in-store research by modeling the degree of forward-looking behavior that consumers may exhibit, an area of significant recent study in marketing and experimental economics. By incorporating the total process of in-store shopping (movement and purchases) in our model, retailers may obtain a more comprehensive understanding of consumers’ grocery shopping behavior. As an illustration of the model’s potential usefulness, we conduct a hypothetical “policy experiment” in which two categories swap locations. We examine the impact of this change on the affected categories as well as other aspects of the shopping trip as a whole.

Using an Integrated Model of Grocery Store Shopping Path and Purchase Behavior

We examine three sets of established behavioral hypotheses about consumers’ in-store shopping behavior (the effect of perceived time pressure, licensing, and the social presence of other shoppers) using field data on shopping paths and linked purchases obtained from an actual grocery store. We incorporate these behavioral hypotheses within an individual-level probability model to examine their ...

The Traveling Salesman Goes Shopping: The Systematic Deviations of Grocery Paths from TSP-Optimality

We examine grocery shopping paths using the “Traveling Salesman Problem” (TSP) as a normative frame of reference. We define the “TSP-path” for each shopper as the shortest path that connects all of his purchases. We then decompose the length of each observed path into three components: the length of the TSP-path, the additional distance due to order deviation (i.e., not following the TSP-order ...

Usage Experience with Decision Aids and Evolution of Online Purchase Behavior

This study investigates how usage experience with various decision aids available in an online store contributes to purchase behavior evolution in a new Internet shopping environment. In the context of online grocery stores, we categorize four types of decision aids: those for 1) nutritional needs, 2) brand preference, 3) economic needs, and 4) personalized shopping lists, and construct a Nonho...

Design and Implementation of an Agent-Based Grocery Shopping System

We propose an agent-based grocery shopping system, which automates grocery shopping process. Agents gather grocery information from several store server agents and compare it with user’s preferences of groceries and stores. The agents could adapt to user’s up-to-date preferences by learning from his/her evaluation of previous shopping results. The proposed agent-based grocery shopping system is...
